An Intimate Look...

Mexican Artist Rodolfo Escalera was many things; a prolific oil painter, a carpenter, a craftsman, a sculpter and a scholar on many levels. What few know is that he also was a Romantic at heart. As a young man he used to visit the town park where all the youth would spend their evenings strolling and talking with friends. One particular night as the boys were walking clockwise and the girls counter-clockwise,round and round the park, he cast his eyes on a particular young lady. Within moments he told his friend that he would "marry that girl someday". He was bold enough to introduce himself to her that very evening and went so far as to tell her that one day she would be his in marriage and that he was "just letting her know!" Well, the rest as they say is history as the two did eventually marry in Mexico and then immigrated to the United States to start their life and their family together. The adjoining portrait is a pencil that Escalera drew the night he and his then future bride, Susana Gonzalez, met. He presented it to her the very next evening at the nightly park stroll.
